Kangaroo, a Truly Sustainable Industry:
Every year kangaroo numbers are assessed by national parks staff and a sustainable number for harvesting of these animals is set. This is typically only 10-15% of the total population.
The harvesting process is strictly monitored by Government to ensure that no more kangaroos are taken than is allowed. The RSPCA has described Kangaroo harvesting as "one of the most humane methods of animal slaughter possible".
The current estimated population of 58.6 million is the highest ever and means there are more than twice as many kangaroos in Australia as there are cattle!
Over the past 30 years a significant industry has developed which utilises the kangaroo resource. Initially its focus was largely on pest control for the pastoral industries. However over the last decade there has been a growing realisation that the kangaroo industry has significant economic and environmental benefits.
The kangaroo industry currently generates in excess of $200 million per year in income and employs over 4,000 people. The vast bulk of these jobs are in remote rural communities, many of which would not exist without the industry.
Because kangaroo leather has a tremendous strength to weight thickness ratio compared to other leathers, it is ideally suited for leather products especially gloves and belts.
